Dave,
        As far as I know, the standard 4-way fanout pattern everyone
        uses on BGA is not patented. Nortel's Patent uses three or more
        blind vias in a row to form a "Channel" in the standard BGA
        fanout pattern. On subsequent layers, a routing channel is 
        formed, which allows up to five traces to be routed using 
        standard 5 and 5 technology.

        By using Nortel's patent, a reduction in layer count is
possible,
        especially on high pin count BGA's (1000 pins or more).

I did a search on Google and Yahoo for "mutiple routing" and it came up
with Channel routing..  So basically Bus Routing..
