Hello Gene, Fred Taking off from Gene's thread, the closest you can get is a rectangle with round edges. But you need a relatively large hole to allow the drills to carve it. Using the slot's shorter side, the vendor will use a drill 1/3 (maybe) of its size. ex. if you want a 4mm x 2.1mm slot, you need a 0.7mm dia (2.1/3) drill to carve the hole. The smaller the drill, the more finer the edges, but may take more time and such bits are more prone to breakage, which is the last thing any vendor wants. If the slot's short side is rather small, perhaps 2mm and smaller, the vendor is likely to use a drill bit of a same size to save time. The best analogy I could give is using your typical power drill, just drive it to a piece of wood, then move it to a certain direction. You got your slot instantly. Our CAD system can do perfect rectangles / squares, but we're limited by the capability of the machines and process that go with it. bambam J. Francisco D. Please respond to icu-pcb-forum@fre elists.org The approach I have typically taken is to call out the slot and let the vendor worry about how to actually make it. But I give "permission" for things that can be done. But from the vendor standpoint, without using a punch, the easiest way to make a rectangular slot is to overdrill the corners then use a round mill bit to do the square sides up to the overdrill. What you need to do for your fab drawing is make this possible by allowing overdrill in the corners by calling it out. The question for you is can you tolerate overdrilled corners for this type of action? -----Original Message----- From: ponni dhanapal [mailto:ponnidhanapal@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, September 27, 2004 11:34 PM To: icu-pcb-forum@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [PCB_FORUM] Re: drill hole... Hi, It is possible to provide a rectangular slot.In the pads stack editor there are options for circular drill ,rectangular slot and Oval slots.U can have any kind of padstacks using these.
