[PCB_FORUM] Re: double stacked components

It doesn't / you don't.

It's only good for de-pops and substitutions where both parts share the
same symbol... typically value changes.

But how does variant manager handle the drcs of parts placed on top of each
other in the layout?

Tried to find you a link to a description but Cadence has re-named
everything since I bought. Allegro Expert came standard with it, I think. I
paid extra for it as an add-on to PCB Design Studio. It allows you to
create variant assemblies/schematics/BOM's with(out) de-populated and/or
substituted parts.

So you make a master schematic with everything, lay the board out, make a
master assembly (every part placed), then use the Variant Manager to create
unique assy/sch drawings depending on what you want stuffed.

Doesn't the "VARIANT MANAGER" handle this kind of thing? I thought there
were provisions for substitutions as well as de-pop... but I'm still a
Cadence newbie and can't speak from experience. I would guess you'd need a
single footprint that was valid for both part numbers; a 'worst of both'.

I try to build a version that would cover both components at the
same time so this problem doesn't happen. Otherwise you just
need to ignore the drcs as "part of your job".
This is an ongoing problem that I believe has never been addressed
in the industry. I wonder why?
Hope this helps,
