[PCB_FORUM] Re: cathode pin 1 or 2

STOP IT RIGHT NOW! THIS STUPID THREAD HAS RUN ON 3 DIFFERENT LISTSERVERS!
CATHODE IS ALWAYS PIN 1 AND THAT'S THAT.

Just noticed that the PADS users group overwhelmingly uses pin 1 for cathode.
What's the vote on this list?

   Pat,
Glad you've brought up the subject. Here's my 2 cents. From the
flood of responses from yesterday, I thought these three had merit.
   1. From Alan Ritter
Basically, our nomenclature is that pin 1 is the "identified" end of a
polarized component. Since the band on traditional diodes is the cathode
      end, that becomes pin 1.
   2. From Donna Robertson
If you are following IPC-7351 Pin 1 is the Cathode.
   3. From Rick Joike
According to the IEEE standards 1992 edition, D or CR may be used, and
the
      pins are identified as "A" & "K".
   ========================================================
I had also heard that JEDEC defines pin 1 as the Cathode. But that it's due
to defining pin 1 as the first pin off of the tape & reel.
The person that actually solders the part on the board or does the rework,
doesn't have a say-so in this kind of decision, but should.
