[PCB_FORUM] Re: Technology Selector ?

Mike,

The Footprint technology selector was developed such that you can
support multiple manufacturing technologies (PCB footprints) within a
single or multiple libraries. To the best of my knowledge it is not
available as standard Cadence code as this is applied skillware. I
cannot say whether Cadence has this functionality on their roadmap to
incorporate as a standard feature, but it has certainly been presented
to them, available for the picking. But as many CAD tool enhancements
go, they sometimes start out as skillware and if in popular demand by
users, Cadence may elect to incorporate the functionality into future
production code.

I can say that this use model is a slight deviation from the Project
Manager design synchronization GUI, so it could require a major dot
release before it could be implemented, if it were to be implemented.
Contact your Cadence representative to see if they may have it on their
roadmap. Generally, known roadmap implementations are not allowed to be
discussed on these user group forums, thus I cannot comment one way or
another. But I have used this Footprint technology selector before and
it has some nice advantages when you manufacture circuit boards
utilizing multiple assembly technologies: ie. leaded reflow, high
density reflow, lead-free reflow, wave solder, flex, and rigid/flex,
etc. technologies.

Of course, your alternative is to maintain separate libraries for each
respective manufacturing technology. But it could become a bit dodgy if
you ever try to do a Rigid/flex design. It all depends upon your
library implementation strategy.

Sincerely yours,

Michael Baumstark

Subject: [PCB_FORUM] Technology Selector ?

I stumbled across an article by Ed Lutz of Motorola (as of 2006)
who mentions
a part of the tool that can be invoked via Import - Logic called
Technology Selector.
This tool seems pretty interesting, problem is that I cannot
find it. Is this part of
a certain tool set within Allegro? Does anyone have any info on
where this is found?
I tried emailing Ed but as of this morning have had no luck.

        thanks,
        Mike
