Ed,
The available fonts are those loaded from the plot device, for you that would the PDF Creator program.
I'm not certain why Allegro is quitting on you. The obvious thing is that there is some sort of linkage between PDF Creator and Allegro that is not happening. 

Can you access other, non-Allegro, files with the PDF Creator program?

Ed,

In the Plot Setup, Windows menu do you have the Non-vectorized text
button checked?   If not, give that a try.
