Subject: [PCB_FORUM] Re: Posy-Layout Simulation
William,
I've used both tools (and others) for pre and post layout simulation -
summary of my thoughts below.
Hyperlynx:
- Interfaces to all major toolsets
- Easy to learn and use
- Great for quick analysis of individual nets, stackups, topologies
- Functions as a standalone tool
- Uses standard IBIS models
- Cost effective (best bang for the buck, although price has increased
significantly since the tool was purchased by Mentor)
SpecctraQuest
- Interfaces only to Cadence tools (? may have changed in recent
releases)
- Extrememly powerful .. can run batch analysis with ranges of
parameters, etc.
- Fits directly into the Cadence "Expert" (or whatever they are calling
it now) toolflow .. can pass constraints back and forth from analysis to
design tools
- Requires model translation
- Very expensive
I'm not sure if SpecctraQuest is available in cheaper "scalable" modules
as the other Cadence products are. Our implementation was a full blown
"Expert" set of tools which was quite expensive.
My advice - Hyperlynx is a great tool for it's price tag. If you'll be
performing many simulations of a large number of nets and can justify
the cost SpecctraQuest is the best analysis tool I've used.
Hth,
Dave
