Jim,
You most likely already know the ipc has this cool
land pattern viewer available for free.
http://landpatterns.ipc.org/default.asp
The viewer has the min/nom/max footprints for many
SMT devices.
My opinion:
One argument, at least for the discretes, is that the IPC offers
standard land patterns that also include the mechanical dimensions
for the physical part. If the individual manufacturers packages is in
the tolerance range of the IPC drawing, then the footprint can apply.
The condition of course, is that one has to verify the package.
This is where I feel your pain. Many manufacturer do not have
a standard package name, they name parts based on theme and variation.
I have often find myself surfing for spec sheets.
One thing I have found is that
http://digikey.com/
has many of the big name parts and links to specs sheets provided.
At least one can cut down on the number of sites.
Gripe:
Don't you hate it when you go to a manufacturer web site, type
in their part number, and it can't be found. What up with that?
I'll be interested to see the follow up posts.

Normally, I am provided component datasheets to create my Allegro
footprints by the design engineer. I have now been asked to find and
download datasheets to create footprints from a BOM. The BOM has
manufacturers, Panasonic, SANYO, TDK Corp., AVX... etc...
I began by going to the manufacturers websites and searching for
specific part numbers, but it is a slow, tedious, and often futile
exercise.
Does anyone have a method, tip, links, or advice on a good method of
finding component PCB layout specifications for different manufacturers
that they could pass along?
I'd really appreciate it.
Thanx in advance.
