Julian,
        Here are three possible solutions.

        1) Run DB Doctor on your board file. Sometimes will
           reduce the file size. 

        2) Use the command "msconfig" (start -->run-->msconfig) and
           view the items under the "Start" tab. Un-check any program
           that you do not want to be automatically loaded at startup.
           Select only programs that you recognize, such as
"AcrobatTray"
           "Real Player" etc. These programs do not need to preloaded.
           Ask your system admin for help if you are not comfortable
           modifying these settings.

        3) Use a program such as "Memory Turbo 2.1" purge and defrag 
           your system memory. We used to get error messages such as
           "System Out of Resources". Since installing a memory manager,
           we no longer get these types of error messages.

I have created a case.
Although Allegro uses ~700 Mb of RAM (I am looking at Task Manager),
there should be lots left for Outlook (24 Mb) , IE (~46 Mb).
System load shows 50%.
I know it should take about 3 to 3.5 hours; what I wanted to know if
anyone on this list has encountered the same thing and has a resolution
for it.

I've found running other memory hog applications (Autocad for example)
simulataneously results in hanging or crashing, and agree you should
exit other applications when running DRCs or Dynamic Pours on a design
that size.

Would be interesting to hear a response from Cadence.
