Thanks everyone, for the responses to the laptop crash issue w.r.t. to
the SPB 16.1 release.
Thanks rjbzxr@xxxxxxxxxxxx for the detailed feedback.
Thanks Sandra: we are running Windows based and not UNIX, so the issues
could be completely different root causes, compared to UNIX. But
crashes there are noteworthy as well. But the issue we are seeing seems
to be more prevalent in the laptop realm more so than with a desktop
machine.
So far, the only takeaways that I see thus far:
- Continued suspicion with Open_GL activated
- And ensure we are using the latest video drivers (Thanks Jack)
- Sufficient memory always seems to be on the list for many issues. I
have been running with 1 Gig and working on some 50 meg. board files
without issues on 15.7
(Any sweet spot recommendations (for memory) for 16.x tools application
with Open GL? I'm sure Cadence has an at-the-ready suggestion )
Note for Oscar and others that are showing interest: I do not know
what the machine specific details are for the Laptop machine that is
experiencing these crashes.
Although it is likely running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 and at
least 1 Gig of memory.
Certainly, anyone running the SPB 16.0 tools would likely be motivated
to be up and running on the 16.1.x releases at this time.
Dale, You will probably enjoy the rules migration in the 16.x series of
tools. Indeed the Net_physical and Net_spacing types should be utilized
to full potential. And now they are more robustly enabled in 16.x.
Although you may now be referring to these rules as Classes. The
assignment table GUI has finally been revamped to better leverage the
shorthand assignment of rules, compared to the drudgery of individually
assigning a Physical constraint rule to every possible interaction, in
long form. Constraint Areas are now also manageable on a by_layer basis
compared to the " old school" through the entire stack-up methodology.
I think you will like the new convention a lot once you get going with
it.
Note: I am even crashing with 15.7 tools while outputting *.pdf plot
files. Not sure what the issue is yet, as I don't muster up plot files
too ofter. I just reload the uncorrupted database and mush on. Agreed,
it does seem a bit annoying when you are not even modifying any CAD
data.
Sincerely yours,
Michael Baumstark

Before I comment, what OS are you running and how much memory?
Kind regards,

Hi Austin,
We noticed that NET_PHYSICAL_TYPE and NET_SPACING_TYPE were
missing from the net properties. These properties are used extensively
throughout our designs. We also noticed that Allegro crashed every time
when we plotted a drawing. Right now, 16.0 isn't right for us at this
time. We're going to try to up-reving in the future when it isn't so
busy.

Hi Dale,
What features were missing in 16.0?
Regards,
Austin

We have switched back to 15.7 because of all the crashes
and a few missing features in 16.0.

We were crashing a lot and cadence told me to download
the latest video driver because open-gl was causing the problem.
After I downloaded the latest driver it is 90% better.

Yes, tons of crashes, Unix A16.01
Today's flavor routing diffs.
Doing a study with lots of drc's I remember there being
an issue once before regarding that, I wonder if it's a reborn
enhancement?
I've also seen this while using the shape functions
create/modify/z-copy.

Is anyone having Allegro crashing issues using SPB 16.1

Have received a few comments of Allegro 16.1 crashing
with Dell M70 Laptops. Can anyone concur with similar problems ( or on
any laptop)?
If so, and better yet, do you know what may be causing
this. I am using a Dell M60 laptop and have had no issues. But I have
not yet started using the 16.1 release of software.
