[PCB_FORUM] Re: ICU2004: SKILL SIG, OpenSKILL Initiative

Another draw back other than performance with SKILL vs. PERL, is that PERL
routines frequently have to be updated with each cadence release with SKILL
routine it is the opposite it is rare you need to change the code from release
to release.

I know and use perl regularly, including the Tk module.

But...

If I create a program in perl, and the same program in SKILL, the SKILL one
runs about 2x faster. Unless it is playing with the board graphics (drawing
lines and such) in which case it is 4-6x faster.

I don't need SKILL, unless I want to be fast.....

George,

You forgot the most important thing... you DON'T need SKILL. If you have a
perl developer, he can do incredible things with the tool. Want an
advocate? Look up Devin Barret (spelling might be wrong). He's done
incredible things with perl, tkl, TK, whatever, outside of SKILL. Sure,
SKILL works, but perl, especially, is incredible with Allegro. Now, is
that open source enough? Any perl developers out there that want to
contribute?

Just a thought... back to my board.
