Just to add another way.
If, by accident, you have deleted just the ref des.
Add text to the Ref Des, Assembly top layer,
pick the part you would like to associate the text with,
and a location for the text.
Type in the old ref des number.
This text will now be and act like the old ref des.
The text layer can be changed to silkscreen top or any other ref des layer.
And can be added multiple times, say if one feels the need to have a
big ref des under the part and a little ref des outside the part
for when the board is populated.
This only works on the Ref Des, Assembly top layer.
One of those hidden features.
