[PCB_FORUM] Re: Gerbers to placement file

I don't have an answer...  but in this world of international companies
and shared IP...  this is an ongoing problem.  I used to do reference
designs at my last company and the biggest issue was translating the
data to some other CAD tool.  

It appears that this has become a bigger problem over the years...  in
the past there were service bureaus that did translations... but the
last time I checked, RSI was sold to Mentor and they only now do
translations into Mentor products.  

It seems to me that the major EDA companies are doing what they can to
be quite exclusive...  not allowing data translation.  

So are there still service bureaus available that will translate?  And
what about the tools themselves...  why are we moving to a situation
where X will not translate to Y?

At this point we are just trying to find out what our options are.....
In
other words "How doable is this?"  So far I have seen some great
suggestions
both here and elsewhere...some particularly time consuming, some
particularly expensive but all welcome. After all the best decision is a
well informed one.....

I hope you've given your customer a premilinary quote for this task. I
can
forsee this turning into a HUGE job, and the customer might be floored
when
he/she gets the final bill. To read in the gerbers, make dummy symbols
for
any parts you might not have, place symols, etc. could be a couple weeks
to
get right. Do you have an assembly print to look at? How would you
determine
the difference between 3 - 2 pin headers, and 1 - 2x6 pin header, for
instance? Bit, if you're getting time-n-material for this job, could be
a
money maker... But, I don't think it will be (just my opinion).
