Gary,
You were right. I tried it with an "old" plt file that did not come in as text. So I went through the process of creating a new one of the bottom side components, imported and mirrored. It works fine.

Thanks again!
Mark

Hey Mark,

I also create my assembly drawing (usually just one, most of our designs fit both Top and Bottom in one drawing) with Export/Import IPF. Whether it's one sheet or two, when you Export -> IPF then Import -> IPF (to scale and/or mirror), text is retained as text, so I'm not sure why you are having trouble with your bottom assembly drawing (I use Ref Des/Silkscreen_Top/Bottom for the designators in my assembly drawing(s) since they are already moved off of the pad, rotated etc., but I don't think it would make a difference if you use Ref Des/Assembly_Top/Bottom).

I can't imagine why you can create a searchable PDF of the top drawing but not the bottom. The only difference should be that you mirror the bottom when doing an Import -> IPF.

Good luck!

One more question Gary,
How do you create the bottom side assembly drawing?
We usually mirror a .plt file of the bottom components, then add the border form etc...
Now the text from the .plt file is not searchable when output to a pdf.

Any suggestions?

thanks,
Mark

Mark, Garrett,

I also think creating the searchable PDF is the way to go. I think the Courier font is the best to use, and I experimented with several fonts.

I've attached a freebee, it's a PDF of a section in my Word procedures on creating a searchable PDF. You will probably want to change the subclasses you view on. Of course you will need Adobe Acrobat Writer (Distiller?), not just a reader to create a searchable PDF.

Happy component searching!

Dave,
Where do you select the "non-vectorized text" option in Allegro.
We are using V-15.1 and I can only find a "vectorized" selection box in Plot set-up. Which is not enabled.
I also looked in Setup/User Preference/Plot.

Thanks,
Mark

I found the font: Arial, height 100% width 75% is pretty close to

allegro font size.

This makes the reference designators searchable on the pdf assembly

drawings.

Just another idea that all of you probably know about....

Why not give them the .brd file and a copy of the Cadence Allegro Free Viewer?

Using 15.2
Our assembly person is having difficulty finding parts on the more dense boards.
Can I get your input on a gerber viewer tool that is free and easy to use for an assembly person to find parts on the board?
