Depends of your preferences but i recommend using right class name (package/paste_[top|bottom])as using display_top would probably create even more confusion later on.
We used this on texas instruments dc-dc converters and it works fine anytime.

My paste gerber definition always consist of three layers: board,package and pin this way it is always covered :)

Experience says that if you define a layer called anything_top it will
mirror to anything_bottom if you mirror the part BUT only if you've defined
that layer on your board. If you place the part mirrored to start with,
though, it'll create the subclass for you. Just remember to turn on that
subclass in your film control records, though, or you've wasted your time!

This has recently come up for discussion on the forum and I believe no
consensus was reached. I suggest that you experiment with it and see what
results you get. Add a paste bottom to the package geometry and try
mirroring it. It cannot hurt to try. I have used
board_geometry>pastemask_top to do mine and I think it worked although I am
not sure I have ever mirrored one of those parts. Give it a shot and let us
know how it works for you. We love hearing from people who try stuff!

Why not just put the shapes you need onto the paste layer in the symbol?


We


have some funky rf parts that have a very large base that needs to be soldered to the board and we just draw in the paste pattern we need and it gets added to the board as part of the symbol. I could be mistaken but I think you will have trouble trying to accomplish this with flash shapes.


If


you need a special pattern that is difficult to make in allegro you can always create it in some cad (autocad) tool and import a dxf. It works great.
