[PCB_FORUM] Re: Change Circle Diameter

I agree that all of us want the tool to do what it
is supposed to do. But what is wrong with making sure the
details are met also? These are some of the little things
that make Allegro the tool we all love and, well, hate
a bit. I don't think they should stop development on the
really important stuff mentioned below but sometimes
they inject a new tool and it isn't complete.
Just finish the job.

I agree with this thought. All I want from the pcb tools are good
interfaces to graphic systems (dxf, idf, etc). Waste of time and resources
to have all that stuff inside the tool.

Well.......

Personally, I'd rather they spend more time on the ECAD side and leave the
MCAD side to the mechanical packages.

They will never get Allegro to have all the features of a half-decent
mechanical package, and trying to removes resources from more important
things.

<OPINION>
There are some on this forum (not pointing any fingers, just a general
statement) that think Cadence is going to hire bunches of programmers to put
every feature in that some other system has. Ain't gonna happen, folks.
They make MUCH more money on the IC stuff and are going to spend development
dollars accordingly. Like it or not, board-level layout is small potatoes
to them. We need to focus on things that are going to make PCB design
easier (like the new DFA stuff coming out in 15.5) and quit giving Cadence
excuses to put real features off so they can do the minor things to help
them compete against Protel. :)

Now, if they would just make a translator so we can use the same DFA
constraints in Valor and in Allegro. I would like to use the DFA stuff, but
our MfgEngs are NOT going to maintain TWO sets of constraints, and we sure
as heck can't afford to hire somebody to do it...

I seem to remember Cadence some years back talking up how they were going to add dimensioning and make it all good and stuff. That kinda happened, like half way, and then they stopped after the first round. I guess the "more important" stuff got in the way (specctra). Cadence, are you listening? Please start working on the "mechanical" side of allegro again.

Thanks for your time,
Kevin

Whole heartedly agree... in fact any feature that could be described

in geometric terms should be easily parametrically edited. This was
one of my biggest gripes with Mentor Graphics tools... They simply did not
support real word Geometries... IE circles, rectangles and the like.

Now the joke to me is that a DOS based too I used in the 80s (TANGOPCB)

did do exactly this... and that was a cheap little $900 tool then... and it
did DXF in and out too. Was a heavy hitter for RF design when used
with AutoCAD. Later I did work with HP ADS and sure enough... parametric
editing. Course you wouldn't even try to layout a motherboard with it.

Now I use these very expensive tools and they don't do basic geometric

work. Funny... sad.

Go one further and note that simple drawing tools do this too... such

as Corel draw. Click on an object and edit attributes... Gosh, what a concept.

Now just in case there is a secret method... Please tell us all.

But, if you do find some secret method that Cadence has kept to themselves, please let us know.
It seems as though changing the diameter (or radius, for that matter) should be within the scope of a tool like this.
Anybody agree?

Vincent,

Unfortunately you cannot simply modify the diameter of an existing circle by changing an attribute. You might try zcopy with the option contract with the value between the two.

  Good morning fellow designers,

Question for you all ..... is there a way to change the diameter of an
existing circle without deleting it and redrawing it? I have a
circle (shape) that has an outside diameter of 0.500" and I now want
it to be 0.375". Can this be done from within Cadence Allegro somehow?
