[PCB_FORUM] Re: Bmp to Allegro

Typically anything I use is for silkscreen, for a logo I just load the
file in Allegro (loads to a pen number) they add a shape, using lines
and arcs on a silkscreen layer. Then delete the lines on the pen layer.
        Makes a solid shape.

Mike,
For a higher quality logo, the instructions posted by Richard
Moffat a few years back do work, but take more time.

Converting a bitmap (bmp, jpeg, gif, or other) to a format for

scaling and colours. You can mess around for hours trying
        different software to achieve this.

This suggestion will make you laugh out loud, but it's quick
and easy to do if you get stuck:

Print the image to transparency, tape it to your screen,
and trace it in Allegro! Then save it as a symbol or a
                clipboard, or whatever.

Time taken? 10 minutes. Do it late at night so nobody sees you?
Probably best to. But does it work? Yes!

I usually load the file onto a bsm and place it at the board level,
this also allows you to put it in a library
for future use. Also allows for easy movement.

I agree with George. The lines are annoying especially if you have to
move the image.

RATA can work as a base, but I would avoid using RATA's lined graphics
in the actual database database.

The RATA program Mike F. is talking about will convert a .bmp to
a .plt file, but the results can be... disappointing. Be prepared to
do a bit of work once you have it imported.

Here is an example of such an import after massaging it:

All the lines tend to blend together during the etch process,
but it looks a bit ugly when looking at it on the screen :)

I seem to remember that somewhere there was a way to convert a
bmp file into something that Allegro could read in, and use on a board.
Does anyone have an idea how this is accomplished?
