I still stand by my first comment.
Let the cm know what you are trying to accomplish and
see if they can find the solution that both of
you can work with. If they cannot then, in my opinion,
you should go with what they say. If not there
could be much suffering. Especially with something
like an 0402 which could have hundreds of landing sites.
If you reduce the chances of hitting or increase the
chances of tombstoning by even 1% that could be
very costly.
Best of luck to you.

Hi Kevin,

We give and take as we can and need to.
Again, it isn't that I think you would come back and
punch me (metaphorically speaking) if the symbol
didn't work, I have had trouble with symbols
before and if I give my cm the chance they will
give me what works for them.
And then it is THEIR fault if it doesn't work!
But I still end up with the problem...
What I would like to do is derive the footprint from overlaying a “standard”
0402 footprint (the standard one we use that is) with the “free” area with
our via size/clearance requirements, and see what shakes out. That should
give me the largest footprint that will “work” for us. The CM may or may
not like it (Solectron), but that’s another issue ;-)
And yes, I have had footprints others have made bite me good. Ones from
people who should unquestionably know better than to do some of the silly
things they do.
Regards,
Austin
