I have a problem with set theory notation - and can't find a (RiscOS)
font which reproduces the 'open' R, C etc
In Archive articles about set theory (e.g. by Gerald Fitton) I use a
font called Mathscript for these "open" characters.
These symbols for sets of numbers, e.g. N for the natural numbers, Z for the
integers, Q for the rationals, R for the reals and C for the complex numbers,
originally were printed in books simply with a capital letter in a bold font,
and that might still be acceptable. The representation with doubled-up lines
is sometimes known as "blackboard bold" which gives you a clue as to how it
arose.
Mathematicians have become so used to this method of representing these sets
on a blackboard that that is now how they are preferred to be printed as
well.
If you can't find a proper mathematical font, I'd suggest plain bold is
better than an "open" font that isn't designed for it.
