Unfortunately, it seems that recent versions of Word open legacy Word files in very old formats (and that includes the format EW uses for export) in a special read-only mode by default that does not allow editing. I think that is independent of the "validation" feature discussed here. Maybe that restricted mode does not allow printing either. Maybe time to consider some new export format (.docx being the most likely candidate), but this would be a huge job.
