Thanks, Daniel, I did think they were special, needed for use just with NLS cartridges, they are handy things to have though. Beth

Original message:

yes Beth, they're exactly the same cable.
You can get them pretty much any place that sells usb cables.
I'm not at all sure why people get the impression that these cables are in
any way proprietary, maybe because in the past so many adaptive tech
devices required proprietary cables,cards, Etc.
The websites tell the truth, you do need a special cable, but it's not as
special as all that.
I believe on the Aph site, they do say that these can be found in a lot of
places, but possibly folks don't take that in as much as the special cable
part.
Perkins and Aph sell these things as a courtesy so folks who may not be
able to get to somewhere like Radioshack can buy 'em the same place they
get their cartridges, and that may be part of it too.
If you can get the six inch long one, which I believe Aph sells, get that one.
Otherwise you get one about two feet long, and while that's fine, you end
up with a coil of cable lying around.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Daniel, I'm saving your post so I can refer to it later, very
helpful! I wonder: Are these extension cables the same as the cables
Perkins sells for use with the cartridges? Beth
Original message:
Okay, I'm assuming that the Orion, like the Icon will have usb connectivity.
I have used my Icon to copy NLS books on to an NLS cartridge many times
with complete success.
I do have one of the extension cables required to do that.
Actualy they're available just about anywhere that sells usb cables.
You want what's known as an extension cable.
Very often these are sold for the purpose of extending things like a usb
printer cable or a scanner cable.
they have a slightly larger end that will recieve the flat usb connector
that fits in to a usb slot normaly.
You just plug the cable in to the external usb port on the cable that
attaches to the Icon, plug the other end of that cable in to your
cartridge, and the Icon will say Usb disk one found, and there ya are!
I know for sure this is possible with an Icon, and if the Orion is going to
have external usb connections like the Icon there's no reason at all this
won't work.
Hope that helps.

If you do try connecting a cartridge to the Orion, please let me know how
you do it and how it goes. Thanks. Beth
