[icon-discuss] Re: Multitasking & Upgrades

Joe, Yes, both ICON and BP are predicated on multi-tasking. You can
download a book in the background while reading another book for example, or
you can listen to a Bookshare book while listening to music. This has been
true since version 1.0 of the software.

Furthermore, BP and Icon have implemented a virtual memory system. As such,
they tend to be able to run more programs simultaneously than the hardware
RAM size would suggest... Just like a PC running Windows XP/Vista/W7.

Just be gentle when running multiple programs simultaneously.... the
procedure causes the hard drive to work hard, and the CPU to run even
harder... resulting in a little bit of application slowdown. That is why in
some cases, NLS books playback can stutter if a lot of other things are
happening at the same time.

Best,

G.

Can the Braille+ multi-task? Guido's note about various volume controls
prompted my question. Also, in looking over the APH annual report,
excellent piece by the way, what would one do if one purchased a Braille+
soon and later wanted to take advantage of the GPS functionality that is
tentatively scheduled for next year? I don't imagine current products are
shipping with GPS chips, but would one be looking at an upgrade or a new
purchase? I guess the bigger question is whether one would be able to do
this when the refreshable Braille displays are available in a few years.

Best,

Joe
