I'd rather use a small scanner thank you!

Why a scanner? Why not a digital camera? That's what the K-NFB
Mobile Reader is using, and a lot of other ocr products either out
or near coming out that use speech are based on digital cameras
instead of scanners. And, it makes the whole scanning and
recognition process faster. And, I am sure a digital camera could
be linked up with the Icon through USB.

Just imagine having all that Icon already has and OCR too.

actually, I saw a discussion today where ocr does take place in
linux.
Hooking up the scanner might be non trivial though.

That's true, David. Since we don't have PowerPoint or excel and no
OCR,
you'd probably need to carry a laptop if you needed to use those
apps for a
presentation.

We'd also need a PowerPoint and excel viewer along with those
printer
drivers so we could bring the presentations on the icon and print
them out
if necessary.

It would be neat to have a scanner, but I don't think many of those
have
Linux drivers.

It depends on what you need to do on the trip. Remember, it
doesn't have
PowerPoint or Excell. So, if you have a need for spreadsheet or
presentation manager then you would still need a laptop. And, of
course,
there is no OCR of any kind.

Hi,

We recently had a demonstration of the Icon in Boston at the VIBUG
user
group:
http://www.vibug.org
materials for last meeting here:
http://drop.io/vibug12apr2008
and printing was also a requested feature that several people
brought
up in the group discussion.

It would also be handy if the Icon had the ability to send faxes
over
the internet as part of the print drivers. This would be handy,
for
example, to fax ones boarding pass to a hotel using on-line check
in.

The question really would be for me does the Icon have enough
capabilities, or will I still need to bring my laptop on short
trips?
If the icon had printing and faxing capabilities it would be all
that
much more ubiquitous avoiding the need to also carry a laptop in
addition to a PDA.

Best,
Mika
