Hi, Everyone:

Below are some comments from Katy and the IASL Board Meeting for everyone to
ponder.

Items of particular interest have been highlighted:

Upcoming online Board Meeting dates are  February 3-12, 2017 and June 2-11,
2017.

We will meet in person at IASL2017 in Long Beach on the afternoon before the
Conference officially opens and also on the afternoon following the Closing
session.

Your comments in the 4th quarter 2016 Board Meeting are cogent and right on
target! Thank you for parsing through all the discussions; now you see how
it works for us.

Going forward, each subheading of agenda topic will have its own entry, to
make it easier to answer each question in a single thread.

As for Open Access publishing and the Canadian side of merged Region, a
prime contact for you is current Regional Director-Canada, Dr. Dianne Oberg,
professor emerita at University of Alberta: doberg@xxxxxxxxxxx

A long-time member of  IASL's  Publishing Committee, Research SIG and
Education SIG, she's a very clear thinker for both immediate and long-term
goals.

Dr. Jennifer Branch-Mueller of U Alberta jbranch@xxxxxxxxxxx  is likewise
involved in these IASL efforts and I believe is the person who originally
suggested the joint arrangement for Open Access publishing.

Did you see the recent posting on the IASL listserv from Dr. Susan Lamarca
of Australia, sharing the recently 'opened'  issue of School Library
Association of Victoria (SLAV)'s research journal? SLAV uses a 'rolling
wall' method so that their members have full access immediately to the
journal, then each issue becomes open to the public several months later - I
like this idea very much, and the IASL Board & Exec are very positive about
it (just need to agree on duration of members-only access).

We are still debating between merged Region name as USA-Canada or North
America, since the latter technically includes Mexico which is currently in
Paulette Stewart's region of Caribbean & Latin America. I don't think we
have any current IASL members in Mexico to ask their opinion on this; we'd
have to check with Jill next week. Do you think that Mexico would feel a
closer affinity to other Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America or to
the USA? Our Region 'boundaries' are not set in stone, so we can change to
suit the needs of IASL members.

Hope I've answered your questions with enough info to generate more
questions!  If you need to query your fellow Board members about something
before we reconvene in February, you'll find their email addresses in my
call for agenda email of Nov 1.

Now, onward into the frenzy of December - where did 2016 go??

**Katy
