        I wish you the best of luck on your endeavor. I would tell the newbie 
to go
out and get a copy of the latest SuSE. I still think it's the easiest to
install, and it is support for a couple of years, if you buy the commercial
version.
        Knoppix is reasonable easy to install, though I just found out that I 
had to
use the beginner's option and let the installer detect the hardware. It does
pass along most of the settings and even programs you have on a thumb drive or
permanent partition using unionfs. These two would probably be the easiest to
distros to install, with Knoppix you end up with Debian, of course. ---Jim
