What is the purpose for even using Linux?  If he or the family is 
comfortable with Windows, continue to use Windows.  You said he has a habit 
of screwing up Windows XP?  Configure all accounts accept to have low user 
privileges so he can't screw it up anymore.  If the main use of the computer 
is gaming, at this point in time Linux is not the option.  By the wording of 
you're e-mail it seemed to me you wanted to give Linux a go because of the 
security privileges... like I said just properly configure Windows XP and 
you should have your self a nice setup.

Linux is a great OS, it may be ready for my desktop, but it's not ready for 
everyone's desktop.
