Although M$ probably has more $$ in the bank, they may not be willing to spend a lot on a product that they will butcher. IBM on the other hand, would probably love to get their hands on Java so they can fix it. I've often read that IBMs own JDK is far superior to Sun's performance-wise. A lot of IBM's products use Java extensively, so they probably don't want to let M$ get control of it.
