They just reported in their most=20 recent SEC documents that they LOST $1.1 BILLION DOLLARS=20 THIS LAST QUARTER and expect to lose another Billion next=20 quarter. This explains the recent "we don't have a Linux=20 strategy' statement by Sun. There is no way Sun will=20 continue to compete against Linux (2.4 or 2.6 kernel) with=20 Solaris running on SPARC boxes, even if they add Linux=20 compatibility to run Linux utilities to make Solaris easier=20 to use. =20 I don't expect Sun to survive through next summer if they=20 don't find a better business model. This raises two=20 questions: 1) What will happen to Java? I expect that Sun will offer=20 it up to the highest bidder and I have no doubt that it will=20 be Microsoft, who will promptly kill it or propriatize it,=20 which is the same as killing it. The money will probably=20 go to Sun execs for 'bonuses' or golden parachuts. 2) What will happen to Sun's employees? We have the Enron =20 model for what happens when EXECs can't or won't realize the=20 results of their attitudes and actions? Many will lose=20 their investments, life savings, and homes. Marriages will=20 crash, families will break up. =20 I won't ask about Sun's upper management. They've probably=20 already sold their stock and now have to decide, like Dick=20 Lay, which mansions they'll sell before they move to a =20 tropical island. =2D=20 Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by=20 professionals GreyGeek ---- Husker Linux Users Group mailing list To unsubscribe, send a message to huskerlug-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with a subject of UNSUBSCRIBE
