[huskerlug] University of Nebraska online classes, Microsoft Required

Today I went to orientation at the UNL campus for the online nursing
classes I am taking through UNMC's BSN program.  Reviewed today were the
requirements for my computer in order to take these online classes.  The
big one was Microsoft.  I have to install Microsoft Windows to use the
web site and software for their program.  They told us during the
orientation that the web site only worked correctly in Microsoft
Internet Explorer.

After installing Windows XP I can't get the web site to display in
Microsoft Internet Explorer!  When I boot into Linux I can at least get
it to post in Mozilla, although it doesn't have full functionality.

On the lecture cdrom's there are wmv media files with video of the
instructor's lectures.  Even with the latest updates to Windows XP and
Windows Media Player, there is no video.  Codec download completes with
100% then flashes a codec download error!

I can play most media under Linux, however, these wmv files will not
play in Mplayer under Linux either.

Aren't student fee's and state tax dollars paying for this Microsoft
only system they have developed?  

All of this and installing MS on my system only days after feeling so
relieved that my system which was previously Linux only was not
vulnerable to BLASTER, SOBIG and all of these other ridiculous security
holes.

Oh, and they were sure to mention the “discount” on Microsoft software
the University offers!
