Browsers that support HTTP 1.1 already have support for uncompressing content 
on the fly.  And, there is a module for Apache called mod_gzip that 
compresses all content sent out.  The two work hand in hand.  

I was using it until I switched from Apache to public file.  It does make 
quite a difference unless the web site is already heavily populated with 
pics.
