Well it is an Article from the "Pulpit" :-)
I've been saying it since Computers got over 300Mhz and 56k was about the
best out there. HTML is just text and text compress very well, in fact most
stuff does except video and Music. Pics compress better than some think
it's hard to get people to understand just how far you degrade quality and
still not notice it in certain applications, i.e. size, picture itself, etc.
Think about it every time you download a compressed file you are effectively
increasing you band width by that factor. If you download a file that 50%
compressed then in effect you have "doubled" your BW? Only going to take
half as long which it what you would get with double the BW.
Now imagine you're a site that gets lots of hits, say you can compress all
you "pages" by 25% a million hits look like only 750,000 on BW. Ok some the
draw backs, if the pages are static that's all well if they are dynamic then
you have to compress on the fly, generate a page then compress it eating up
lots of CPU power. Another draw back is caching already saves a ton of BW
by saving and not re-downloading redundant images and such. It would
difficult to do a system that could compare the page it sent with any
previous pages it sent server side so there would be some issues to work out
there, and again more CPU time needed.
Recycle, Reduce, Reuse :-)
