[huskerlug] New Hardware--DMA problem?

Greetings,

I have just got a new (Tiger Direct) computer, with an Athlon +2200
processor and most everything integrated on the board. No OS was
installed. I had some older distros around and rather to my surprise RH
7.2 and Mandrake 8 both failed on installation. Mandrake merely said
"Second stage aborted" with no explanation. RH, however, gave what may be
an error message and then hung. I let it go all night--just in case. The
message at the end:

Partition check:
hda: hda: timeout waiting for DMA
ide_dmaproc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func only: 14

and then it _sat_ with hard disk access light on steadily. Incidently I
had already put partitions hda1, hda2, and hda3 on the disk with
Slackware's fdisk.

Interestingly enough, an even older Slackware 8 distro installed with only
one minor hitch involving LILO. Of course, X-windows doesn't work yet
with Slack since that's the hard part.

Anyone have any clues?

Since our experience with Tiger Direct is that ocassionally their stuff
needs to be returned because it just doesn't work--there is likely a
non-zero probability that there is a hardware problem in spite of the
Slackware success.

Thanks for any help.
