But isn't that part of the beauty of the OS model? To take a piece of
software and do as you please with it? When people put software out
there and open source it they want people to use it and make it their
own. These people are not happy with Gentoo, and they have their
reasons and their right, so they'll take what is out there, publicly
available, and continue on the road they think best.
Even with the kernel this is true. People take the kernel and make it
their own. There are a whole bunch of forked kernels out there, it's
just the best known is Linus'.
I've yet to decide if the fragmentation of Gentoo is good or bad.
Gentoo was started out by 1 man and then other joined. So he was flying
solo for a while. I don't think that a couple of developers leaving,
and moving on to the fork, will be detrimental to Gentoo. And I think
the Gentoo people should be proud that their product is so good others
are using it as a basis and model to build their own.
I like Gentoo, it runs great, great package management, and their
installations are getting better. Gentoo for enterprise? Maybe.
Anything that gets the word out that there is more to life than
proprietary everything I see as good. Even if it flops, because people
can learn from it, and move on to bigger and better things.
Well, this turned out longer than I expected. Probably should put the
whole thing in between <rant> </rant>. Oh well...
