I'm a very new user of Linux, and decided to switch from Redhat to
Gentoo, mainly to experience a different distro. I have run into
problems accessing my network however. I managed to compile and install
the kernel, however when I first booted it up I got the error:
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No Such Device
Failed to bring eth0 up
Netmount was not started
I have been to the Gentoo forums, and can't seem to find a satisfactory
solution. My installation process after the preliminary steps went
something like this:
I ran make menuconfig, and under the network devices, I added support
for PCI/ISA/Onboard devices, 10/100 support, and then checked the option
for Realtek 8139 support. I have a D-Link 550TX network card.
After finishing the configuration I ran
make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
emerge app-admin/metalog
rc-update add metalog default
emerge sys-apps/vcron
rc-update add vcron default
emerge sys-apps/reiserfsprogs
Modified fstab, change root password, /etc/conf.d/net, etc.
rc-update add net.eth0 default
At this point I rebooted and got the errors. If anyone has any
suggestions, I would really appreciate them. This is frustrating me a
lot.
