Your welcome. What those statistics show is that all Windows=20
platforms have about the same level of stability:

W98 50315/2430 =3D20.7
W98SE "A" 155312/7223=3D21.5
WinME 83258/4234 =3D19.7
NT4 SP6 9353/481 =3D19.4
W2K SP3 28258/974 =3D29.0
XP 5.1.2600 38112/1453 =3D26.2
XP 37629/2250 =3D16.6
            XP Avg =3D20.5

Overall average 402237/19045=3D21.1

So, what does this say about WinXX improving in stability as one=20
"progressed" from Win95 through Win98, NT5, W2K and finally XP?
Little if any real improvement. They all were/are pretty wobbley.
Everybody who runs XP claims it is really stable for them. I don't=20
believe it. At work I ran Win95, Win98, NT4 and now Win2K Pro. They=20
were all pretty crash prone, and W2K Pro is no exception. Using=20
WinXX you learn to do some things to help increase your uptime --=20
reboot every morning, reboot after any kind of program crash, never=20
have very many apps open at the same time, don't do anyting else when=20
you are burning a CD, save documents every 5 minutes while editing=20
them, scandisk and defrag every week. When in doubt --- reboot.
=46inally, once the crashing gets to be more than you want to tollerate=20
have your hardware guy reformat the HD and reinstall WinXX from=20
scratch. And my last piece of advice --- NEVER, I SAY NEVER=20
'upgrade' to XP. To do so is to give Microsoft ownership of your PC.

I purchased a new Sony Vaio on Dec 29th, 1996.
It came with Win95 installed. Sony had installed something called a=20
"Medi-Kit" which was supposed to make things more stable. Between=20
the day I bought it and May 5th, 1997 I had to reinstall the entire=20
OS FIVE TIMES, about once per month. It crashed incessantly, at=20
least once an hour. That is what drove me to look for another OS. I=20
had used OS/2 and was considering returning to it. I went to=20
Barns&Nobel to see what the latest on the OS/2 was, and discovered a=20
book by Sams Pub. called "Learn Linux in 24 hours". It included a CD=20
with RH 5.0 on it. I had nothing to loose by trying an OS that came=20
free with a book that cost $25. It took me 30 hours to learn Linux,=20
but but I was hooked. BTW, that Sony, running RH 5.0 never crashed=20
once from May to September. I switched to SuSE 5.3 in Sept of 97 and=20
stayed with SuSE till this March, when I switched to Mandrake 8.2. =20
In Feb of 2000 I got a new 1 GHz Athlon with 500MB of RAM and two 30GB=20
HDs. Linux has never crashed once on this PC.
