Well you have to take numbers in context, compare your "average" Linux =
user
vs. "average" windows. Windows user many of time accept "problems" as
normal operation when it fact it quite fixable if you know how. When I =
was
working the Dorm Project slappin Ethernet cards in machines on machine
showed up and under quirks was listed "boots in safe mode", and it sure =
did
it would fail to boot normally and got into safe mode...they thought =
that
was normal, I was nice and since you can't get an Ethernet card or
networking to work in safe mode I took some time and fixed it, don't
remember what it was BIOS resource conflict something took a bit of time =
to
find but easy fix.
I have seen windows system "crash" ever hour, most of the time it's user
error, wrong driver installed, bloat software (aka gatorware and the =
like)
etc...it's normally a problem with external conflicts with the OS. Not =
sure
where I read it but some software company said the code M$ gave them to =
help
develop their software was like giving the 3rd, 8th and 95th line of =
each
book in the bible and trying to write in the rest... So it's amazing as =
much
as it does works.=20
Hard drives, hard drives fail due to mechanical wear, anything that
increases that "wear" is likely to increase the likelihood of a =
premature
failure, all hard drives will fail it's only a matter of MTBF. Here =
again
more windows systems out there so a drive when it does die is more =
likely to
be in a windows system.
Remember "backups" are more than just data, What are you going to do if =
a
drive fails? A NIC? Video card? System board? RAM? Power supply? People
seem to focus solely on data, well what's your goal? If it 24/7 =
operation
with zero down time you need to be thinking about more that your data.
There are a lot more parts which can fail inside your computer, fans are =
a
big point of failure and failed fan can lead to any number of problems =
and
failures in time.
I consider my Dual CPU system as "backup"...I've already had to do it =
once I
had a CPU fail I just pulled out the bad one and ran single CPU until I =
got
a new one. Same with keeping multi DIMMS in most system in the event of
failure I can pull the DIMM out and use the remaining one(s).

Not to try to start anything, but that bugtoaster site doesn't say=20
much... It says Windows boxes have crashes, but that's it... I think=20
everybody and their dog knows that. It doesn't say what the computers=20
are doing when they crash, or anything else related. I think the=20
average of 15-21 crashes per box in a 24 hour period is a bit high... =20
I've never seen a computer (let alone an average) showing that a=20
computer crashes once an hour.
Also... this story about harddrives running MS systems dying is=20
something I'd like to see... I can't say I've ever heard of a difference =
in harddrive wear between Windows/Linux.=20
