[huskerlug] Re: Backups

I wouldn't talk Microsoft here, except that it is a
fact of life that everyone we advocate Open Source to,
including College Boards (who tax all of us, with a
Microsoft tax!) thinks that it is the only OS that
exists!

As advocates of Open Source, we cannot afford to be
incorrect, and want to advocate GNU/Linux choices
foremost. But, there are some areas, some
applications, not yet fully fulfilled by any GNU/Linux
application. Happily, this is being rectified at the
rate of over several dozen new applications each day
at http://sourceforge.net.

I cite my hardware on MS OSes
unreliability/destruction vs. Open Source
stability/reliability, as one of the major problems
that is seldom addressed in any literature, and I seek
some credible statistics of hardware reliability to
back up my own experiences.

I predict that the TOC (Total Ownership Cost) debate,
that was warped by MS into some kind of double-speak
for their marketing effort, will be replaced by a
genuine and unshakable dissertation on the unreliable
aspects their OSes introduce in the most stable
hardware platforms/processors/storage devices.

This argument is a very on-topic one, concerning where
the world spends it's money on the IT infrastucture!

OK, so Microsoft OS comes with certain 'defaults' in
place, that destroy equipment within 3-4 months!

The installer/user must track down, at great expense
in time/resources, all the default problems and repair
them!?

Who 'owns' your data? If you have to convert, then
you are serving a master who cares nothing about your
work!

The thrashing of my drives, when using any of the
stolen code that MS has re-mal-formed to be their
non-standards compliant word processor(s), is not
something I will tolerate, nor, will my clients.

If a 'standard' is complied with, in any application,
then no data should ever have to be converted!

Try http://sourceforge.net and click on the 'software
map' header to open up all the catagories of
applications and programs available.

Who uses GNU/Linux? You can now add the 'Gnomes of
Munich'
