[huskerlug] Re: Backups

I seem to have had much better luck with ME than most people. Perhaps it's =
because I try not to trust the OS as much as possible. I don't use "FindFas=
t" and disable the "extras" and "helpful" parts of all the MS products that=
I can find. I have had one hard drive failure in the four years that I've =
owned the computer.

I'm using Word 2000 as part of the Works program that came with the compute=
r. I plan to uninstall it and use Open Office as soon as I finish a book pr=
oject. I used to like the old MS Works 4 program before it had been complet=
ely Micro$ofted. I still use an old copy of Publisher 97 for the same reaso=
n. M$ adds all the "Helpful" crap like "Clippie" and tons of other junk and=
hides all the settings and other things you can use to create a useful env=
ironment from the junk they set you up with.

I hate all the bloat, and that seems to have become the pardigm for the who=
le Window$ world. I just had another program that I used to like, update it=
self almost to the point of unusability. Unfortunately I converted my data =
before I found out about the problems. Live and learn.

I have a number of graphics programs that work only under Windows or I'd be=
using Linux right now. Gimp does a lot of what I need, but not everything,=
so I'm stuck with M$ for a few more months while I investigate alternative=
s.
