All machinery breaks eventually. I have over 25
systems here. Two run winME. Guess which ones break
most often? I mean that the hard drives crash, loose
sectors, start to constantly seek, with that clacking
sound, etc. Only the Microsoft ones! Even on the
dual boot machines, with identical models of drives in
hdc: (Open Source) and C: (MS)!
The two dedicated winME systems are an AOpen P166,
(free, from the rental store, when they dumped 500 of
them on the local LUG, http://leap-cf.org in Central
Florida), and, an Athlon 1.4Ghz for compatibility
testing. I have the same make/models of hard drives
in many of the other systems, running various versions
of BSD, and about a dozen distros of GNU/Linux.
The Athlon 1.4Ghz unit has a removable hard drive.
Those ATA100/133 drive bays, with included fan, seem
to work well, and sell around $10.00. Cheap
insurance, as we put all the data files on them. The
installed, first, hard drive holds the Microsoft OS,
and it's system files, and tends to loose it all every
3-4 months, in every MS OS computer of my acquaintance
.
The other hard drives that failed in systems here was
the second drive on a dual boot Celeron 600 machine,
and that second drive had win98 (for dual boot) on
it... and, about 6 others, in my group of friends, and
family. All that failed ran Microsoft OS!
I contend that there is something that thrashes drives
in Microsoft products, and suspect it includes
"findfast" and perhaps some other programs...
When we talk stability, in Linux, I am seeing it,
since I have been running multiple computers with the
all the above cited operating systems for the past 6.5
years...
I do also, run the Open Source OS on the first drive,
usually a 1 GB to 10 GB drive, storing and using all
other files on a 6GB to 120 GB second hard drive.
I have been designing, building, and maintaining
computer systems since 1965. I was in electronics
systems maintenance in the Air Force 1965-1985. I am
no stranger to long term reliability testing. After
the past 6.5 years of experience, I trust Open Source
OSes, like BSD and GNU/Linux.
I run 'anything' Microsoft as little as possible, not
just because it is closed, and has multiple
vulnerabilities, and, it has many 'back-doors' open to
crackers, but, now, I am sure of the fact that
Microsoft code thrashes equipment severly.
I tweak and update the Microsoft systems, daily, (what
a waste of my time!). I cannot afford to replace all
my hard drives every year!
I also have burned coasters ONLY in Microsoft, while
even the cheapest blank CD-r's seem to work well in
GNU/Linux, (haven't tested BSD) with cdrecord.
Question: Has anyone seen any long term hardware
failure reports due to Microsoft OS, vs. Open Source
OS? I would like to see the maintenance records of
Hotmail (Linux/ BSD on 6 to 8 thousand servers) vs.
MSN on MS IIS OS.
My clients trust me a lot, but, solid documentation of
my theories, supported by third party results, does
add to the credibility of my claims!
