Squooshy indeed! I can also tell they are fat by the sound of the wing
whirr-- like the drone of a C130 (jump planes that are all too common a
sight/sound around here).
Finally found a place to check email here in downtown Southern Pines.
We did sustain flooding and damage from Matthew. But we are no where
near as badly off as our friends further east. I imagine Bill Hilton
will report in at some point-- I am betting he still is without power.
My lights came back on last evening after about 18 hours. Phone lines
are down across most of the area still. And we have heavy traffic along
Rte. 1 as people are detouring from I95 (the main north-south interstate
along the east coast). That situation is likely to continue as the
rivers responsible for the flooding have yet to crest. Initial reports
are that roads all over central and eastern NC may be impassible for up
to a week in places. Of course some are totally washed out as well.
Swift water rescues are still occurring and are likely to continue for a
day or so. Anyone who has tuned in to The Weather Channel has seen a lot
of footage from NC I am sure. All too reminiscent of Hurricane Floyd.
And I have yet to get a good report from the Outer Banks but I know
there was significant flooding. Plenty of RTHUs did make it through in
Manteo and Buxton.
One happy note is that we had a AHY M CAHU show up late last week in the
foothills at the home of a historic winter hummer host. Dwayne Martin
will be reporting on it as soon as he gets there I am sure-- hopefully
today.
