Humbander,

I have been talking with a lady who has been feeding a Costa's in north Reno, 
NV and she uses a reptile heat pad (comes in different sizes) and seems to work 
ok with just sitting on a concrete block....using the Rose Pedal style feeder. 
This feeder (glass/plastic) by the way is very popular with attracting hummers 
here out west, and good for windy conditions without sloshing that we now 
suggest to hummer enthusiasts.
Obviously we all miss the old style popular 30 oz. PP .

Just another note…I have another current hummer host who has done the 
traditional silver domed utility light only they use a “brooder” bulb I think 
it’s called…you know the ones they use for baby chickens and can find at feed 
stores.  It’s worked wonderfully.  In fact it was 12 degrees here today and the 
food did NOT freeze solid…got a bit slushy but the homeowner was on it and had 
the feeder changed out before first light so the food was fresh when the RUHU 
showed up this morning at around 7:30 am.   But generally the home owner has 
been very pleased with that set-up.

Hello,

I ordered one back in November and it came straight away, so may be worth 
contacting them if this hasn't already been done.  The trick with this feeder 
is to make sure it's only 1/2 full or less, otherwise one of my hosts found it 
froze.

Regarding this feeder ... be aware that it can take QUITE AWHILE to receive one 
that has been ordered. I have a host in Louisville who ordered one the first 
week of December and it *still* has not come in. I presume these folks are 
being inundated with orders and having a hard time filling them??? This host's 
bird, a HY M RUHU, did not stay past Christmas, so she has ordered one for a 
bird that has departed; I told her I would buy it from her when it comes in if 
she wants, then I will have one to loan to hosts in my area. We had a HY F RUHU 
winter in a yard in west KY last year using one of them.

  Yes, as a matter of fact. I own one myself and I have a current winter hummer 
host who is using one with her return RUHU. Plus I have recommended them to 
others who have purchased them.

    It might be an additional alternative for those of us under the arctic ice 
sheet who also host hummingbirds. More and more, homeowners are telling me that 
it is getting harder to find an incandescent spotlight, as mainly LED versions 
are available now, which put off good light, but less heat.
