Fri morning, June 23
Hi Folks,
The most recent market report is ready. Please go here:

Tonight's auction should feature cauliflower (in bins), strawberries,
zucchini, and yellow squash. It will be business as usual.
We had a rain storm of epic proportions early thursday morning. This was
variously estimated at 5 1/2 inches up to over ten inches followed by an
additional 2 1/2 inches thursday afternoon.
Damage to agricultural interests in the immediate area possibly exceeded the
Fourth of July flood of 1969. In a few cases whole fields were swept away,
the plastic mulch, drip line and the plants are just gone. The main line of
the B&O railroad just north of Homerville was also swept away.
Here at Owenlea Farm, at least a 1000 mums are gone. We can't even find the
plastic pots. I guess they are in Lake Erie.
But we had the field walk anyway at the Noah Hostetler farm on thursday night.
It was very well attended even though the farm was an island.
Assess to the Hostetler farm from the south and east was blocked by high
water, but access from the north was better as the water was only up to the
hubs on Amish buggies (less than 2 feet deep).
The speaker from the experiment farm didn't make it to the meeting citing
reasons such as all roads closed, big trees and power lines down everywhere,
and 70 mile per hour winds.
Anyway the crops at Noah's looked extremely good. We saw large fields of
beets, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, cantalopes,
watermelon, hard squash of various kinds, and acres of pumpkins. He also had
a large amount of cabbage and cauliflower still in the greenhouse for late
plantings. Everything looked really good.
Questions that came up during the walk seemed to center around what to do
about the various bugs. The bug scout wasn't present but many of his clients
were present and they passed along much knowledge.
The meeting had a very positive affect on the growers as they were able to
talk over the flood damage.
More than one grower joked that he couldn't resume irrigation until the water
went down enough so that they could find the pumps.
This is a pretty resilent bunch of men, and not likely to be much affected by
a little wet weather.
