RSA signing and verification seems to work (thanks Kristian).

Debugged RSA signing and verification with Kristian (thanks, I owe U a
beer) in handling of R1. He noted an off-by-one bug in the code. It
seems to work now at least against itself, but we'll see how this works
in the interops...
The next problem is mismatching HITs:
hip_handle_r1: SIGNATURE in R1 ok
hip_handle_r1: ***ERROR***: Sender HIT does not match the advertised host_id
