Hi, Keith here in Amherst, NY

Back in 1963 I learned the code for a Boy Scout badge. We wrote the dots & dashes on paper and used a lookup table in the Boy Scout Manual. Hey, it worked!

But it was S-L-O-W...

Our scoutmaster knew a local ham who came in and taught us to copy by ear, and from that copy dots and dashes sent by flasher light. Now, this is my own opinion, but nobody should EVER learn code by the dots & dashes method. Unlearning the bad habits I picked up probably kept me from getting my 13 WPM for the General for years. I passed 5 WPM for the Novice and Tech in 1965 and it wasn't until 1972 that I passed the General.

I have tried to 'read' the calls on the Argo and Spectran displays, I can figure it out, but I almost have to whistle them off the screen to do it! My hat's off to those who can copy them that way. I have yet to find a CW reader that will handle the speed changes, QRM and pauses in a beacon ID, the CW program in FLDigi won't nor would my Kantronics KAM multi-mode TNC. ANy suggestions out there?

For now I will keep on copying by ear, I can even copy the beacons on the HTX-100 when driving, most of the time anyway!
