[HUG ] Re: polaroid backs

DEAR JAMES,
Polaroids (or Fujis these days) are useful if you are shooting
commercial photos. Most clients don't really understand what they see
through a view finder but do understand what they see in a print, albeit a
small one. I use them to get clients to let me know what they do and don't
like. I can work the set up until I get an approval from them...I actually
make them initial the Pola/Fuji.
Also, as about 1/4 of my commercial work is interiors and
architecture, I am constantly balancing the daylight on the views outside
the windows with some very subtle "helper" fill strobe light inside the
rooms. My philosophy is that the room shouldn't look lit...it should look
the way it does to the viewer's eyes. We all know that the visual system
has a MUCH greater dynamic range than film so I just help the film out a bit
by filling in very subtly. This is VERY hard to do with just a light/flash
meter. The feed back you get from instant photos (Pola/Fuji) makes this
VERY easy.
As Karl said, instant films are not very good "light meters" as they
vary quite a bit from batch to batch and are greatly affected by ambient
temperature, even if you adjust the development time according to
instructions. Some people do use them that way but I will continue to put
my faith in my trusty Minolta Flash Meter IIIs and keep the instant films
for the above mentioned purposes.
Sooooooooooooooooo, like all tools, Pola/Fuji instant film can be
very useful for certain purposes and, as Jim said, a big waste of money for
others.
                CHEERS!
                        BOB

But they are handy for studio and strobe work. Always nice to confirm all
lights are firing, etc.

DO NOT use a Polaroid product as a light meter, especially for exposures
longer than 1/125 second or so.

I had a Polaroid back for my Hassy for years. Finally sold it as I
never used it - the Polaroids have marginal information for landscape
photography, which is what I do. Actually, Polaroid stopped making
film, but Fuji makes it. I don't remember the product numbers as there
are several types. My advice... sell the back if you can! You'll just
waste money on the film and not get anything good from it. Instead of
looking at a Polaroid, study the image on the ground glass screen.

IMHO,

Jim
