Yes, that sounds like it is the best option.

If you are new to the system, you should buy a kit that works. I've bought parts/user kits that have defects like yours, but I can repair my own.

The flash port lever is NOT the lever to uncouple the f/stop and shutter.

The WLF should sit fully into the camera body and in no way interfere with the film back. With the WLF off, see if the focusing screen is fully seated. There is an interlock that will only clear if the focus screen is seated properly. Maybe that is blocking the WLF.

Do not grind the WLF.  If properly working, it does not need that.

If you aren't confident with what you have, I suggest you return it (unless you got it for a song).
