Dear Victor,
I have to confess - I avoid married couples after their weddings. I
do a good job taking their photos with the Hasselblad system, and I wish
them all happiness, of course....but I find the business of dealing with
repeat print orders to be terrible.
You see, as I get older I grow less patient with people. If they
cannot do simple things, like order reprints, it rouses my anger.
Each proof sheet I do has a letter at the top and a number
in each frame. I use the Kodak system of numbers 41, 42, 43, etc. It would
not seem too hard to connect the letter and the number to the image of the
bridesmaid removing cake from her ear and to write it clearly on the order
form. Or to specify which size picture you want - 6 x 4 or 8 x 10 - they are
the only two sizes I print. Yet the number of orders for " the regular
picture " or " that other one "....
The number of orders that are phoned in - and I specify that I don't
take phone orders - and the number of offers to pay later when the order
form stipulates that they pay now....
The other advantage of avoiding the newlyweds is getting away from
possible baby photos. Say what you will about the profitability and all,
these are portrait sitters that leave nappies and piles of sick on the
studio furniture. I might be willing to accept that sort of behaviour from
belly dancers and glamour girls but the screaming and crying is another
thing.
You must have had it easier with your chosen subject - bird
watching. Okay you sat in cold damp swamps for days but at least if your
subjects REALLY annoyed you, you could take a shotgun to them!
