[HUG ] Re: SV: Re: Dollar fall kills Hasselblad? (and Leica?)

This is a photography forum, so I hate to extend this discussion of economics, but I feel compelled to add this note.

Unfortunately, we have a very serious situation here, and the fate of Hasselblad or Leica is of little importance compared to the danger this represents to the world. But the danger is not actually the economic issues that are being discussed here (and everywhere else). The USA is so powerful an economic force, and so dominates the world economy that its a little weird to think the failings shown here will be far reaching in and of themselves. No, the problem here is not economics, it is politics. The USA political process, and hence the decision-making process that affects almost everything we do has been corrupted by monied interests that own our politicians, and our political processes are limited to play acting, trivialization of real problems, focusing on making other people look bad, all while trying to raise money to further influence the next campaign. I don't mean to trivialize the economic issues. They are important and will affect the lives of many people. But they are secondary to a corrupt political system.

You wouldn't say that the problems of Nigeria or Zimbabwe are economic, even though people are starving there. Their problems are related to corruption. And that is also the case in the USA right now.

If you are seriously interested in this issue I would recommend that you look at recent issues of "Foreign Policy," a periodical that you can get at Barnes and Noble (in the USA). In particular take a look at an article in the current issue by Farheed Zacharia (or something close to that). He is an uncannily insightful person, and he writes beautifully.

I am no economic expert either but some of the effects are quite clear.
Loans to the US in foreign currency are increasing.
The prices of import goods are increasing to prevent that buyers
from other parts of the world buy in the US in stead of in their
own country.
Used goods in the US will be dead cheap to buyers from abroad.

In general this situation is not good for the Americans.
The USD lost its shine as a trading standard and will be left in
favor of the euro.
All things considered this is not a healthy situation.
The US are spending money their grandchildren will have to earn.

Dieter,

"For foreigners whose currency is stronger
than the US dollar, it's a boon..."

- Sure. So we have discovered.

- And for all the other people? Like some 300 million US consumers..? What
do the dollar fall mean to them...?

 "Just my two cents' worth..."

- Euro-cents....?
