Well, I did have separate film and print darkrooms in my studio and
until digital began to take over, many labs ran all weekend except they
closed at 10 pm on Sunday night for cleaning and re-opened at 6 am on Monday
morning. They used to get my E-6 film processed and dried in time for me to
edit and have an assistant deliver it to the client by 9 am. Been there,
done that, bought the T-shirt then used it to clean up after my puppy! I am
glad I survived those days. As David Bailey said, "Good bye Baby and Amen!"

HI BOB,
You seem to be forgeting about billing the equipment costs to the customer.
I shoot both 'Blad and Nikon and although I have not increased my hourly
rate I do charge a capture fee of $60 per hour, so rather than film and
processing on my bill you'll see a capture fee. my invoice reads something
like this:
1hr Photography @ $150.00
1 digital imaging charge @ $ 60.00
3 contact sheets @ $35.00
Then after the client selects the images they want I charge $75.00 per hour
for Photoshop time plus prints. I only supply digital files for selected
images.
This is for Commercial or architectural work, for catalog type work I charge
per image but still factor in the capture fee and photoshop time. You've
got to pay for the investment from somewhere and the old 10% of your hourly
rate won't cut it. 20 years ago you bought a 'blad system and you used it
for 10 years before you upgraded a lens or 2 and maybe added a new film
back. Now 5 years ago you bought a 'blad H1 digital system and have
upgraded it twice. Clients need to know that digital costs MORE money than
film but it gives them more. I have been shooting some digital for almost 3
years and completely digital for 18 months. To me Film is still cheaper but
my clients don't want to wait 3 days for proofs. I did a commercial shoot
on Saturday morning and the client wanted to see proofs in his inbox Monday
at 7AM, thats tough to do with film unless you have your own lab.

I paid assistants to process and contact print or sent color to a
commercial lab and billed every roll, contact sheet, and print to the
client. I trained the assistants to do printing "my way" and tried to
inspect every print before it left the studio.
There is no question that digital can be more competitive than film
by eliminating the materials and processing costs but the differences are in
cost of the equipment compared to the income potential are astounding, not
proportional.

One could argue that you should add your film & processing costs to truly
compare the price of an H3D and an film camera - however, it seems that the
consumer stuff (point & shoots and cheaper SLRs) is getting close to the
price of their film equivalents...
How much did you spend per day on film & processing back in the days??

When I had my ad photography studio in NYC (1973-1993) it worked out
that one day's ($2,500 US) pay bought one major piece of 'Blad equipment.
Less expensive lenses and accessories were obviously a smaller portion.
Soooooooooooooo, if I got a week long assignment that would be better
produced with a new Blad goodie, it made sense. In 1980 got my ELM (which
is still working beautifully) for one day's pay (though that day may have
been closer to $3,000)...I don't remember exactly.
Back then there were photogs who got MUCH more per day than I.
Today, I have heard that the going day rates in NYC and London (3,000 and
5,000 pounds sterling) are between $3,000 (low end) and $8,000 to $10,000
and up (high). Am I right that digital 'Blad bodies cost around $35,000 US?
I don't think there are too many photogs who make $35,000 US per day.
In conclusion I feel that the equipment prices have risen much
faster than the income rates.
