Dear Nephew Wilko,
The business of making one person alluring to another person - what
to do, what to do...
What do you do when they come in and say "Make me look fabulous!"
and they are fabulous to start with? What do you do when they are not?
Is it possible to grit one's teeth and brace oneself and think of
the British Empire and expose that film in spite of dreadful sights
unfolding on the studio paper roll? Should you drape the focussing cloth
over your own head and set the lens for maximum depth of field and hope for
the best?
I do belly dancers - which means a studio carpet permanently
sequined and bits of broken glass beads set into the pile ready to penetrate
the bare feet of the unwary - and even with this genre there are times when
a costume will not cover the artistic circumstances, let alone cover
anything else. I find my greatest ally is the 6093 Pro Shade I purchased
from Art Ketchum on eBay. He included a number of purpose-made diffusers
with central openings and smudged edges. You can give the lady fabulous eyes
and the suggestion of swirling colour elsewhere and gloss over any untoward
anatomy.
I have yet to have a model come in and ask for unflattering or
inappropriate pictures of herself so that is not an issue. I find if she
wants to entice, she generally knows who she is aiming at and what
particular allurements will be most effective. I ask what she thinks and we
work on it. I am happy to be allured at as we work and some of the ideas
they bring are really effective if I can light them. I'm afraid I am a
shameless user of gels, the brighter the better.
I find in the studio a cheerful attitude rather than a soberly
professional one seems to do the trick. Plus stop for tea frequently and
provide plenty of chocolate biscuits.
Uncle Dick
